Tangle
An exhibition of drawings by Laura Pels Ferra

Tangle takes its name from the common name for several species of kelp found along Scottish shores and from the intricate connections between seaweed, history, ecology, and place.
Presented in Gallery 495, the exhibition continues the gallery’s celebration of local landscape, community, and environmental ideas.
These drawings celebrate the beauty, complexity, and variety of seaweeds found around the coast of Scotland, shaped by careful study of their shapes and structures. They explore the forms, patterns and textures of these remarkable organisms through drawing. They continue a tradition of looking closely at nature, inspired by the women who, during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, collected and carefully pressed seaweed into albums that were both works of art and records of observation. Although their work was often regarded as a decorative accomplishment, it demanded patience, skill, and close observation of the natural world.
Beyond their beauty and diversity, seaweeds play essential roles in coastal ecosystems. They support marine life, absorb carbon, and help sustain healthy coastal ecosystems. Increasingly, they are recognised as potential allies in addressing some of today’s greatest challenges, from climate change and biodiversity loss to sustainable food production and alternatives to plastic.
Both ordinary and extraordinary, seaweeds are a familiar presence on our shores and a reminder of our entanglement with the sea.

National Fishing Remembrance Day- 11 May 2025
The Cellardyke Trust are organised an event at the Pittenweem Fishermen’s Memorial statue on Sunday 11th May 2025 to coincide with National Fishing Remembrance Day.
National Fishing Remembrance Day is organised by The Fishermen’s Mission
2025 is the 150th anniversary of the East Neuk’s largest loss of fishing vessels and crews. In 1875, five boats were lost coming back from Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft, two Cellardyke boats, the Janet Anderson and Vigilant, and three St Monans boats, The Beautiful Star, the Quest and the Thane. This was a tragic loss of 37 fishermen, leaving 19 widows and approximately 72 children fatherless.

In remembrance of this loss there were two silent walks from these communities, the first left Cellardyke Town’s Green at 1.30pm and the second left Miller’s slipway at St Monans at 1.45pm. We had a representative from the current community for each of the crew members on these walks, carrying a stone with the crew member’s name. They were handed over at the service at 2.45pm and laid by a nameboard of the boat they were lost with. There was alsoa flagstaff raised with ribbons attached, one for each of those left behind.
After the service, approximately 3pm a wreath was taken to sea on the Scottish Fisheries Musuem vessel the Reaper ( a vessel very similar to those lost) and laid in the water just off the harbour to a pipe lament.
In Dec 1875 crew members of the Beautiful Star and Thane whose bodies were retrieved were interred in Kings Lynn Cemetery. A stone was erected in 1876 as a mark of respect.

“Jake Brown Artist Statement
Some times I push paint over canvas. Some times I push paint over board. Some times I paint over paper. Some times I nail things together. Some times I pull things apart. Some times I shoot snaps with a film camera. Some times I shoot snaps with a digital camera. Some times I draw with a pen. Some times I draw with a brush. Some times I write with a pen. Some times I write with a brush.
But always creative.”

‘The Girl, the Ghost and the Shadow’ – Holly Cowie

Gallery 495 is excited to announce our next artist: Holly Cowie.
As the nights draw in, Holly’s illustrations will light up the gallery with the story of ‘The Girl and the Ghost.’
Holly is an illustrator and writer.
‘The Girl, the Ghost and the Shadow’ @gallery495cellardyke. Is an original folktale that will unfold over the course of October, with new images and words each week. The text of the story will appear page by page in the Wee Library beside the gallery as the images are revealed.
The installation is designed to be viewed from outside the gallery, after dark, when it will be illuminated from the inside. There is currently a delay with lighting so these photos are taken from inside while installing the exhibition. You can enjoy the way the images overlay the world outside.
The exhibition will run to the end of the year.
The accompanying folktale-themed creative writing workshop run by the artist is at:
The Haven, Cellardyke on 2 November at 2.30pm, when the final scene will be revealed.

“IMMERSE” by Johanna van den Berg
This St Monan’s based artist is exhibiting at Gallery495 the community art gallery on Cellardyke Harbour until the end of December 2023.

12 Nov 2023 – We were very proud of our young folk at the Remembrance events.

A few weeks ago Charoltte our 2023 Sea Queen had worked with her attendants to decorate some Poppy Stones.
Yesterday at Cellardyke Church they took their painted stones into Cellardyke Church and held the 2 minutes silence in an event specifically for them. This was followed by an amazing recounting of the bomb that landed and exploded in Rodger Street in 1941 by Bill Motion who was 10 at the time.

Today they attended, St Ayle, Cellardyke Church service when the Minister’s sermon was aptly based round memorial stones. They then joined the procession to Kilrenny and Cellardyke War Memorial and placed their stones after the wreaths were laid.
Charlotte Ambrose 2023 Sea Queen is seen with her attendants and Jenny Hodge, Sea Queen Elect at the Memorial. This was one of Charlotte’s community events.
