Exhibition – Belonging Cellardyke and Kilrenny

Chris Mackenzie

Christina Thompson was born in Aberdeen in 1930 and as a child experienced the German bombing raids on the city during WW2. She left Aberdeen at the age of 20 to move to Pershore in Worcestershire where her brother Sandy had moved to previously.

Chris’ first job down South was in the NAAFI before becoming a bookkeeper for the MOD in the Officers’ Mess at RAF Defford. There she worked for 8 years, and it was here she met George Mackenzie, her future husband. They were married in 1960 and started married life together at RAF Dishforth before moving to the Davidson/Mackenzie family home in Dove Street, Cellardyke in December of that year when George retired from the RAF.

Children, Donald and Morag were born and in this time Chris had joined Cellardyke Church Women’s Guild, being a regular church goer. Indeed, Chris was treasurer for the Guild for over 20 years. Always active in the local community, she became a member of the WRI and secretary to the Cellardyke Improvements. This group organised the Sea Queen and daughter Morag was crowned Sea Queen in 1980, with Donald previously being a King at Arms in the crowning ceremony.

In her working life, while residing in Cellardyke, Chris worked in the office at Fisher and Donaldson’s in St Andrews but is probably better remembered for serving in the china department of Harry Fowler’s shop in East Forth Street and for the last 20 years of her working life in the office of Tom Carstairs at Pitkierie Garage.
